With that being the case I'd go for the HDX everytime. When you add up and compare the numbers they are in the same range. HDX u can keep same machine u already own or get a cheaper base model w/ ram. With HD Native you also have to factor in the big price of a maxed out 12 core or similar maxed out machine to go with HD Native. Unless you already own a maxed out 12 core. It took thunderbolt 1 year and now we are seeing thunderbolt equipped units. We just have to give it more time than 27 days to make a conclusion. HDX is a godsend and will thrive there where budgets are huge and systems will sold. And let us not forget about post houses who have been running 6 and 7 linked HD6 rigs for film mixing.
In the NAMM interview w/ mcdsp and sonnox the sonnox guy said aax-dsp by end of the year.įor some HD native is enough but TDM/HDX is more than just plug-in power. Took a year or so when going from Mix to HD for plug developers to catch up.

The next Mac Pro in whatever form will be better than a 12 coreĪAX native and AAX DSP plugs will apparently sound the sameĪll 32 bit float, I can load someone's HDX session in native or vice versa within reason (but we"re talking average sessions 256 tracks or less, not film scores.) Let's see what Pt11 with 64bit brings,Ī 12 core Mac can easily perform the same or more plugin counts than an HD5 DSP system If I felt I needed HDX to continue making the same or more money in my room I would already have it, everyone's situation is different. I use protools TDM everyday in my studio and couldn't imagine mixing a record in anything else, I did a mix in native yesterday for a client ("after watching the Frank Fillipetti Avid interview for the 5th time") and my 8 core actually did a great job in HD Native with my apogee 800, and believe me at first I didn't wanna believe native sounded as good or better than my 20,000 TDM rig, but now I'm clear that it is just as good.

Pt10 is in desperate need of an update to fix dropped audio, they are charging $1000+ for broken software, but as always your system and mileage may vary.

I think Avid has taken a my way or the highway attitude with the developers and the loyal HD clients by not planning this upgrade better.
